Chakuli Saree – A Revival of Rural Heritage
Chakuli is a rare and once-forgotten handloom saree tradition that was historically worn by women in North Karnataka, particularly among farming communities. Known for its simplicity, durability, and comfort, the Chakuli saree was an integral part of everyday life, designed to suit the needs of women working in the fields.
Woven with practicality in mind, these sarees were lightweight, breathable, and easy to drape, reflecting both the climate and the lifestyle of rural Karnataka. Despite its cultural and functional significance, the Chakuli weave gradually disappeared over time due to the decline of traditional handloom practices and changing fashion trends.
Today, this beautiful legacy has been brought back to life through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Hemalatha, under the initiative of the Punarjeeva Trust. Through this revival, not only is a lost textile tradition being preserved, but local artisans are also being empowered with sustainable livelihoods.
The Chakuli saree stands as a symbol of resilience, heritage, and revival—bridging the past with the present while honoring the craftsmanship of rural India.
