Chettinad Revival Saree

About a century ago, weavers from Karnataka migrated to the Chettinad region, bringing with them their weaving traditions and adapting them to suit the local climate and lifestyle. What emerged were sarees that were durable, breathable, and made for everyday wear—deeply connected to the needs of the women who wore them.

These early Chettinad sarees, often known as Kandangi, were woven using coarser cotton yarns (40s–60s count), resulting in a thicker, stronger fabric. They were characterized by bold contrasts, vibrant colours, and simple stripes or checks—woven on traditional pit looms and dyed using natural processes influenced by the local environment.

Over time, the weave evolved. Finer yarns came into use, making the sarees lighter and softer, gradually moving away from their original texture and character.

During her research, Dr. Hemalatha discovered an old Chettinad saree preserved in the Karaikudi temple—one that reflected the earlier, more rooted form of the weave. Recognising the importance of this legacy, she undertook the effort to revive the original Chettinad saree, before its history faded beyond trace.

This revival brings back not just a saree, but a lost chapter of handloom—where strength, simplicity, and everyday functionality defined beauty.
